If you are into some data analytic view then the HypeCycle above is your best friend, but it talks about machine learning, I am talking about AI as a whole getting more into the grey area of philosophy.
As usual the grand idea started as sci-fi occurring to the creative writers of the time. The word used was a rather impure term of "consciousness"(dirty term! alert) in machines. We will stick to the term intelligence which is more closer to a sense of intellect.
I may have mentioned before with reference to "Artificial Intelligence a Modern Approach" that we never created aeroplanes to replace birds in nature or to create an exact replica of it, likewise I want to make clear that we are not creating AI to replace humans. THEN WHAAT?? Let's get talking now.
Human consciousness is much more, than simpler idea of human intellectual capabilities. So if you say we can replace humans with AI, then sorry it may not happen anytime soon. Mostly intellect is about breaking and studying which explicitly acts on data or knowledge (dirty term! alert). This is exactly what computers were made for, processing the data in memory. Coming into the era of AI the memory got big, the processing power got bigger and the algorithms got better.
What about intelligence(now a dirty term! alert) ? Define what the algorithms do the best as intelligence and and now you can say they got intelligent. This is why I gave a dirty term alert. Earlier when we used systems which only worked like if this .... then that... like structure, we called them SMART, remember.
Now take your time and give your definition to intelligence.

When you read that remember to use the idea of Agents in AI rather than models in Machine Learning (if you have used ML models before then you have a tendency to think in that terms).
When you have found your definition to Intelligence add Artificial to it to create your personal idea of Artificial Intelligence. Most probably your definition points back to our fist dirty term of "consciousness".
Now according to eastern wisdom or early yogic understanding from India, a prime element of consciousness is "creation" or "creativity". Systems can create right? Lookup Generative Adverserial Networks(GAN) for example. But is it the same nature of human creativity. When Mozart created his own style of music or Einstein created a whole new field of physics the element of "NEW" is not really same as the one used in context of GANs. Which leaves me thinking can human creativity work in zero-knowledge situation or from complete stillness or nothingness.
Guys that's the scope of my AI. "I can't understand what I can't create". In the pursuit of AI I seek to not create a whole new world of industry but a whole new dimension of what I am.

We say AI can take all our jobs. Well under my scope of AI it can only take the jobs that were only based on some memory but not creativity. Whenever there needs to be a creative solution, human needs to be there but I could be wrong.
P.S:
I will not make a general conclusion in my post, since I want my reader to leave in a state of confusion and think for themselves. Look for the dirty terms, redefine them and analyse the post again.
