A spark starts everything.First it smokes, then it fires . It burns the skies. Accept it or not we are passing through the time of thinking machines jumping out of the comics into real life.
Why does it always happen to the writers, i mean "THE IDEA".Jonathan Swift in his Gullivers' Travel includes "the engine"(this i would call first SPARK), a partial autonomous mechanical machine . Later "Metropolis" , "Star wars" then it was a revolution of thinking autonomous machines in books and films.
It was quite a topic of speculation for the men who lived a life ahead of their time.Czech writer Karel Čapek introduces the word "robot" in his play Rossum's Universal Robots. The word "robot" comes from the word "robota" (work).
The whole idea of Artificial Intelligence took its time to bake a cake. Intelligence was then attributed to learning trait of human beings.Efforts where taken in modeling the scenario.Several philosophical works existed which finally would have happened to Thomas Bayes that learning was more of probability than certainty . The "bayesian inference" came to be a still accepted, widely used machine learning classifier.
There the 2nd SPARK i may call. The field of statistics and probability played its way through difficulties of the time and contributed in depth to the infant field.Now you can check the wikipedia page for machine learning and get surprised on the number of statistical learning methods linear regression,logistic regression,k-nearest neighbour,support vector machine.... sorry didn't mean to freak you out.This is the growth THE GROWTH.

The field kept itself silent for some ages and rejuvenated in its full power by 2000's (especially since 2015 )and now OMG!!! The field is accelerating.If you are subscribed to cornell university's arxiv.org you may know the speed of growth.SO..............
